Rice

As with a lot of asian nations, rice is an import crop for Japan and has been grown for over 2000 years. There are two major types of rice used in Japan. Japanese short grain rice - in two forms, "hakumai" (white rice) and "gemmai" (unpolished rice). And mochi rice which is more sticky than traditional japanese rice and is used for dishes such as rice cakes.
